In August 1963, Aeronautics India Limited (AIL) was incorporated as a Company wholly owned by the Government of India, to undertake manufacture of   MiG-21 aircraft under licence. Amalgamation of the two companies i.e. Hindustan Aircraft Limited and Aeronautics India Limited was brought about on 1st Oct 1964 by an Amalgamation Order issued by the Government of India and the Company after the amalgamation was named as "Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)" with its principal business being design, development, manufacture, repair and overhaul of aircraft, helicopters, engines and related systems like avionics, instruments and accessories.

The government approved Rs 48,000-crore deal for the purchase of 83 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Twitter that it was the largest-ever procurement deal in the military aviation sector. He added LCA fighters will be the backbone of the airforce in coming years. He said HAL has already set up a second line manufacturing facilities at its Nasik and Bengaluru divisions.

The order comes as a major boost for HAL as well, which had been working on securing the order for the past two years. The next steps will be to order the engines, avionics and radars for the fighter jets that are still dependent on foreign sources.

HAL has paid the interim dividend of Rs.15 in December 2020.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has signed a contract worth Rs 400 crore with Tech Mahindra for implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) to support its project Parivartan.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has announced net profit of Rs. 613.45 in September 2020.
